Description
Mizolastine is a non-sedating antihistamine that blocks histamine H1-receptors on effector cells of the GI tract blood vessels and respiratory tract. It also has mast-cell stabilising properties.
Indications
- Seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (hay fever)
- Perennial allergic rhinoconjunctivitis

Pharmacology
Mizolastine is a non-sedating antihistamine that blocks histamine H1-receptors to reduce allergic symptoms like itching swelling and rash.
Mechanism of action
Relieves allergic itching swelling and rash.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Allergic conditions: 10 mg once daily
- Elderly: 10 mg once daily
Child Dose: >12 years: 10 mg once daily; <12 years: Not recommended.
Administration
- May be taken with or without food
- Swallow tablet whole
- Take at the same time each day
Missed dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember; skip if its almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Elevated liver enzymes
Precautions & warnings
- Caution while driving (may cause drowsiness and dizziness)
- Caution with alcohol
- Stop 3 days before allergy testing
- Contraindicated in liver disease
Contraindications
- Significant cardiac disease or history of arrhythmias
- QT prolongation
- Electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia)
- Significant bradycardia
- Significant hepatic impairment
Drug interactions
- Ketoconazole, Erythromycin: Increased plasma concentration
- Antidepressants and Anxiolytics: Increased sedative effect
- Quinidine, Amiodarone: Risk of cardiac arrhythmias
Food interactions
Alcohol with Mizolastine is safe (no harmful effects).
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Generally safe. Animal studies show low or no adverse effects; limited human studies.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Probably safe. Excreted in breast milk so caution advised.
Pediatric use
Not recommended for children under 12 years.
Geriatric use
Elderly dose: 10 mg once daily.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Limited information available. Consult your doctor.
Hepatic Impairment: Probably unsafe - avoid.
Overdose effects
Overdose may require cardiac monitoring and symptomatic treatment. Hemodialysis is not effective.

Store in a cool and dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
