Description
Mupirocin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria causing skin infections by inhibiting protein synthesis. It binds to isoleucyl transfer RNA-synthetase enzyme to prevent bacterial protein synthesis. It is active against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria.

Pharmacology
Mupirocin binds to bacterial isoleucyl transfer RNA-synthetase enzyme to inhibit protein synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death.
Mechanism of action
Treats skin infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Impetigo: 2% ointment, apply to affected area tid for 5-10 days
- Secondary skin infections: 2% cream, apply to affected area tid for up to 10 days
- Re-evaluate after 3-5 days if no clinical response
Pediatric Dose (Topical):
- Impetigo (>2 months): Apply to affected area tid for 5-10 days
- Secondary skin infections (>3 months): Apply to affected area tid for up to 10 days
Administration
- For external use only
- Clean and dry affected area before application
- Apply 3 times daily
- Dressing may be applied if needed
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and nose
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
