At a glance

Ocular Irrigating Solution (Calcium Chloride + Magnesium Chloride + Potassium Chloride + Sodium Chloride + Sodium Acetate + Sodium Citrate) is a sterile solution used as an extraocular and intraocular irrigating solution during various ocular surgical procedures involving perfusion of the eye with an expected maximum duration of less than 60 minutes.

Description

Ocular Irrigating Solution is a sterile solution used for extraocular and intraocular irrigation during various ocular surgical procedures involving perfusion of the eye with an expected maximum duration of less than 60 minutes. The solution contains Calcium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Acetate, and Sodium Citrate.

Calcium Chloride prevents and treats negative calcium balance and facilitates nerve and muscle function. Potassium Chloride is a major cation of intracellular fluid, playing a role in nerve impulse conduction. Sodium Chloride is the major extracellular cation important for electrolyte and fluid balance. Sodium Acetate serves as an alternate source of bicarbonate by metabolic conversion in the liver. Sodium Citrate alkalinizes urine and binds with urinary calcium.

Indications
  • Extraocular and intraocular irrigation during ocular surgical procedures (< 60 minutes)
Therapeutic class

Ophthalmic Irrigating Solution

Pharmacological class

Intraocular Irrigating Solution

Pharmacology

Calcium Chloride prevents or treats negative calcium balance and regulates action potential excitation threshold to facilitate nerve and muscle performance. Potassium Chloride is a major cation of intracellular fluid, playing an active role in nerve impulse conduction and muscle contraction. Sodium Chloride is the major extracellular cation important for electrolyte and fluid balance. Sodium Acetate is an alternate source of bicarbonate by metabolic conversion in the liver. Sodium Citrate alkalinizes urine and binds with urinary calcium.

Mechanism of action

This solution is used for irrigating the intraocular and extraocular surfaces during surgery, maintaining electrolyte balance and keeping tissues hydrated.

Dosage

Adults and Children: This irrigating solution should be used according to the standard format for each surgical procedure.

Note: Expected maximum duration is less than 60 minutes.

Administration

For use as an irrigating solution during ocular surgery only. Not for injection or intravenous infusion. Administered by healthcare professionals during surgery.

Missed dose

Hospital-only medicine. Administered by doctor or surgeon during surgery. Missed dose concept does not apply (part of the surgical procedure).

Side effects

Ocular-related: Corneal swelling (corneal edema), bullous keratopathy, corneal clouding, corneal decompensation, post-operative inflammatory reactions.

Irrigation or any other trauma may result in corneal swelling or bullous keratopathy.
