Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride .05% Nasal prep is used for nasal congestion caused by common cold, flu, hay fever and other allergies. It constricts blood vessels in the nose to temporarily relieve nasal congestion.
Description
Oxymetazoline is a direct-acting sympathomimetic which has vasoconstrictor effect on mucosal blood vessels when applied topically and reduces oedema of the nasal mucosa. It acts as an α1-adrenergic receptor agonist.

Pharmacology
Oxymetazoline stimulates α1-adrenergic receptors in nasal mucosal blood vessels to cause vasoconstriction, reducing mucosal oedema and congestion to relieve nasal blockage.
Mechanism of action
Temporarily relieves nasal congestion by constricting nasal blood vessels.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Nasal):
- 2-3 drops or sprays in each nostril twice daily for 3-5 days
Pediatric Dose (6 years+):
- 2-3 drops or sprays in each nostril twice daily for 3-5 days
Administration
- Gently blow nose before use
- Close one nostril while applying to the other
- Sniff hard to ensure medication reaches deep into nose
- Repeat for other nostril
- Tilt head back, hold dropper close to nose without touching
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Nasal irritation or discomfort
- Sneezing
- Rebound congestion (if used >3-4 days)
- Watery eyes
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use for more than 3-4 days (risk of rebound congestion)
- Caution in heart problems, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, prostate enlargement
- Do not share bottle with others (to avoid spreading germs)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
Drug interactions
- Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs
Food interactions
No food interactions (nasal use).
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Oxymetazoline may be unsafe during pregnancy; animal studies show evidence of fetal harm.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Oxymetazoline is probably safe during breastfeeding; no significant risk to baby; remove excess solution with absorbent tissue.
Pediatric use
Safety not established in children under 6 years.
Geriatric use
Elderly may require dose adjustment.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal Impairment: Caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Hepatic Impairment: Caution in liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause systemic effects (hypertension, tachycardia); symptomatic treatment.

Store at room temperature; protect from light; keep out of reach of children.
