Secnidazole

Secnidazole is an antibiotic medicine that helps your body fight infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It is used to treat infections of the liver, stomach, intestines, vagina, brain, heart, lungs, and skin. Secnidazole is also used in the treatment of dental infections, leg ulcers and pressure sores. This medicine may be taken with or without food. However, it should be taken at the same time each day to get the most benefit. The amount you are advised will depend on what you are being treated for and how bad it is, but you should take this antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better after a short time but do not stop taking it until you have finished a full course of treatment, even if you feel well. If you stop taking it early, some bacteria may survive, and the infection may come back. Do not drink any alcohol while taking this medicine and for some days after stopping it. Otherwise, you may get unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. The most common side effects of this medicine are headache, vomiting, nausea, and vomiting. These are usually mild but let your doctor know if they bother you or last more than a few days. You can try using sugarless candies or lozenges to overcome any dryness or metallic taste in the mouth. Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you are allergic to any medicine or have any kidney or liver problems or any disease of the nervous system. Your doctor may change the dose or prescribe a different medicine. This medicine should not be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless it is absolutely necessary and prescribed by your doctor. Secnidazole is an antibiotic. It kills the bacteria and other microorganisms that cause infections by damaging their DNA.

• Bacterial & parasitic infections

Secnidazole is active against E histolytica, G lamblia, T vaginalis, Clostridium spp, B fragilis, Gardnerella spp. The drug enters the microorganisms by diffusion and is reduced intracellularly by low oxidation-reduction potential ferredoxin which then result in DNA damage.

Adult Dose: Oral Trichomoniasis; Amoebiasis; Giardiasis Adult: 2 g as a single dose. Severe invasive amoebiasis Adult: 1.5 g daily as single or in divided doses for 5 days. Child Dose: Oral Trichomoniasis; Amoebiasis; Giardiasis Child: 30 mg/kg as a single dose. Severe invasive amoebiasis Child: 30 mg/kg daily for 5 days.

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Secnidazole is to be taken with food.

If you miss a dose of Secnidazole, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

[UNSAFE] Secnidazole may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Always take the complete course of treatment, as advised by your doctor, even if you feel better. It may cause side effects like nausea, stomach upset, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Secnidazole used in a high dose or for a prolonged time increases the risk of side effects such as nerve damage. Take it only as prescribed by your doctor. Do not drink alcohol during or for 2-3 days after treatment with this medicine. You may develop nausea, vomiting, flushing and headache. Inform your doctor if you have liver disease. Your dose may need to be adjusted in severe liver disease. Secnidazole treats infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It may also be used to prevent infections following surgery.

Hypersensitivity; pregnancy (1st trimester) and lactation.

Concurrent disulfiram admin may cause psychotic reactions. Disulfiram-like reactions with alcohol. Cimetidine may prolong half-life. Potentially Fatal: May potentiate anticoagulant effect of warfarin and increase risk of haemorrhage.

[UNSAFE] Consuming alcohol while taking Secnidazole may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heart beat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure (Disulfiram reaction).

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Secnidazole may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.

[CAUTION] Secnidazole should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment of the mother is completed and the drug is eliminated from her body.
