Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3 is a combination medicine used to treat osteoporosis. Alendronic acid is a bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast activity to increase bone density, and Vitamin D3 helps in bone formation by increasing calcium absorption . This combination significantly reduces the risk of fractures. It is available as a once-weekly tablet containing 70 mg alendronic acid with either 2800 IU or 5600 IU of Vitamin D3 . In Bangladesh, it is available as Bonemass D, Ostel-D, Fosavance, etc. .
Indications
• Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: Reduces the risk of vertebral and hip fractures. • Treatment of osteoporosis in men: Increases bone mass and reduces the incidence of fractures. • Treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. • Correction of vitamin D deficiency in patients with osteoporosis.
Dosage
Adult Dose: Upper GI disorders (discontinue if symptoms worsen); history of ulcers, active GI bleeding. Correct vitamin D and calcium deficiency before starting therapy. To be taken half an hr before breakfast and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after admin. Not recommended for use in patients with CrCl <35 ml/min. Renal Dose: Alendronic acid reduces bone resorption by inhibiting the action of osteoclasts.

Precautions & warnings
[UNSAFE] Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3 may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive. Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3 is not expected to have any effects but in rare cases, it may cause dizziness, severe muscle, joint and bone pain and eye pain or inflammation. This may affect your ability to drive. Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3 is used in the treatment of osteoporosis Take it on the same day each week, in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything. Maintain an upright posture for 30 minutes after taking the medication so the medicine doesnot irritate your food pipe. Take care of your teeth and jaw while taking the Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3 and for regular dental checkup while taking Alendronic Acid + Vitamin D3. Take calcium and vitamin enriched diet. Side effects such as headache, back pain and indigestion may occur.
