Hyoscine Butyl Bromide is used for the relief of pain due to smooth muscle spasm, especially cramps in the stomach, intestine, bladder and ureter.

Indications
  • Visceral spasms in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Visceral spasms in the genitourinary tract
  • Spasmodic dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Acute renal (kidney) colic
  • Acute biliary (gallbladder) colic
  • Relief of spasms during diagnostic and radiological procedures
Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 20 mg 4 times daily
  • Spasmodic dysmenorrhea: Start at least 2 days before menstruation and continue up to 3 days after period starts

Adult Dose (Parenteral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 20 mg IM/IV, repeat after 30 min if needed; Max: 100 mg daily

Child Dose (6-12 years, Oral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 10 mg 3 times daily
Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Blurred vision
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Dilatation of pupil

Others: Dry skin, flushing, bradycardia followed by tachycardia and arrhythmia, fatigue, vomiting, dizziness, staggering

Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Hyoscine Butyl Bromide may decrease alertness and affect vision; do not drive if these symptoms occur
  • Avoid alcohol (may increase drowsiness)
  • Inform doctor if you have heart problems, thyroid problems, fever, constipation or difficulty urinating
  • Caution in prostatic enlargement (BPH); caution in elderly patients
  • Concurrent use with other anticholinergic drugs may enhance effect
