Description

Ciclopirox Topical is an antifungal medication. It is used in the treatment of fungal skin and nail infections. It works by stopping the growth of fungi, thus treating the infection. Ciclopirox Topical is for external use only. You should use it in the dose and duration as directed by your doctor. The amount you need, and how long you take it will depend on what you are being treated for. You should normally wash and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of the medicine. You should avoid getting in contact with your mouth, eyes and nose. In case of accidental contact, wash it off with plenty of water. Keep using it regularly to get the most benefit. The most common side effects include itching, burning or stinging sensation at the site of application. They are not usually serious and often disappear with time. If they bother you or do not go away, let your doctor know. Ciclopirox Topical is an antifungal medicine. It stops protein production in the fungal cells disrupting the cell division process. This is how it prevents further growth of fungi and helps to treat your skin and nail infections.

Mechanism of action

Ciclopirox has a wide spectrum of antifungal activity and some antibacterial activity. Inhibits most Candida, Epidermophyton, Microsporum, Trichophyton species and M. furfur by inhibiting transport of essential elements in fungal cells, thus disrupting DNA, RNA and protein synthesis.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Topical/Cutaneous Seborrhoeic dermatitis Adult: As 1% ciclopirox base shampoo: Apply 5-10 mL into the scalp twice weekly for 4 weeks, with a Min of 3 days between application. Skin fungal infections Adult: As cream: Apply onto affected areas bid. Topical nail solution Onychomycosis (Fungal nail infection) It should be applied once daily (preferably at bedtime) to all affected nails with the applicator brush provided up to 48 weeks. Child Dose: Children <10 yr: Safety & Efficacy not established.

Administration

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the cream. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

Cover the affected and surrounding skin areas and rub in gently. Do not apply more often or use longer than directed. This may increase the risk of side effects. Avoid getting it in your eyes, ears, nose or mouth. If this happens, rinse with water immediately. Inform your doctor if you notice changes in color or burning sensation of skin. Avoid use of nail varnishes and artificial nails during treatment. Do not share your nail-filer to prevent spread of infection.
