Gliclazide is an antidiabetic medicine used to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Indications
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Dosage
Film-coated tablet:
- Initial dose: 40-80 mg daily
- Can be increased up to 320 mg daily in divided doses when needed
- Take before meal
Modified release preparation:
- Initial: 30 mg once daily
- Increase in increments of 30 mg up to max 120 mg daily
- Interval between doses should be at least 1 month
Children: Not used (contraindicated in juvenile-onset diabetes)

Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Upset stomach
- Indigestion
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Other Side Effects:
- Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
- Skin reactions (rash, redness, itching)
- Increased liver enzymes (rare)
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Risk of hypoglycemia may be increased in the first few weeks of treatment.
- Irregular meals, skipping meals or fasting may cause hypoglycemia.
- Avoid alcohol (increases hypoglycemia risk).
- Regular blood sugar and HbA1c monitoring required.
- Caution in severe kidney or liver disease.
