Magnesium Sulphate injection is used for decreased magnesium levels in blood and for controlling seizures in pregnant women with high blood pressure. It widens blood vessels in the brain and improves blood supply to nerve cells.
Indications
- Seizures in pregnant women with high blood pressure (eclampsia/pre-eclampsia)
- Decreased magnesium levels in blood (hypomagnesemia)
- Torsades de pointes
- Barium poisoning
- Cerebral edema
Dosage
Hypomagnesemia (IV): 1-2 g over 5-60 mins, then 0.5-1 g/hr
Torsades de pointes: 1-2 g over 5-60 mins
Eclampsia: Loading: 4-5 g over 10-15 mins, then 1 g/hr IV OR IM 4-5 g every 4 hours; max 30-40 g/24 hr
IM (Mild deficiency): 1 g 6 hourly for 4 doses
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)
- Nausea, vomiting
- Flushing, thirst
- Hypotension, drowsiness, confusion
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in patients with bleeding disorders, heart block, kidney problems, or breathing problems
- Caution if taking nervous system, heart, or hypertension medications
- Monitor serum-magnesium concentrations
- Caution in pregnancy
