Sulfacetamide Sodium 10% Eye Prep is used for conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and other ocular infections. It exhibits bacteriostatic action by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis.
Indications
- Conjunctivitis
- Blepharitis
- Other ocular infections (E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Klebsiella, Enterobacter)
Pharmacology
Sulfacetamide Sodium competitively binds to dihydropteroate synthetase, inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis. It interferes with nucleic acid synthesis, preventing bacterial growth and division.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):
- Conjunctivitis and other ocular infections: 1-2 drops in affected eye(s) every 2-3 hours
- Dosage may be tapered as condition improves
- Treatment duration: 7-10 days
- Trachoma: 2 drops every 2 hours (with systemic therapy)
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Local irritation, stinging, and burning
- Nonspecific conjunctivitis, conjunctival hyperemia
- Secondary infections
Serious (Rare):
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome
- Toxic epidermal necrolysis
- Agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in history of allergy or asthma
- Caution in G6PD deficiency, renal and hepatic impairment
- Prolonged therapy requires CBC and urinalysis
- Maintain adequate fluid intake
