At a glance

Baclofen is a centrally acting muscle relaxant used for the treatment of spasticity (muscle stiffness and spasms) caused by conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, motor neuron disease, spinal cord injuries, and cerebrovascular accidents.

Indications

  • Flexor spasms and concomitant pain, clonus and muscular rigidity

Pharmacology

Baclofen stimulates GABA-B receptors at the spinal level, inhibiting both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes, which reduces the release of glutamate and aspartate and decreases excessive muscle contraction. It also acts at intraspinal sites producing CNS depression and exerts an antinociceptive effect.
