Desloratadine is an antihistamine used for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Indications
- Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (sneezing, nasal discharge, itching, congestion, ocular itching, tearing, redness)
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives, itching)
Dosage
Adults & ≥12 years: 5 mg once daily.
Children 6-11 years: 2.5 mg (5 ml syrup) once daily.
Children 1-5 years: 1.25 mg (2.5 ml syrup) once daily.
Children 6-11 months: 1 mg (2 ml drops) once daily.
Hepatic or renal impairment: 5 mg every other day.
Side effects
Common: Sleepiness, headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, myalgia.
Precautions & warnings
Caution while driving (dizziness, sleepiness may occur). Avoid alcohol (may cause excessive drowsiness). Stop at least 3 days before allergy testing. Caution in liver and kidney disease.
