Description
Mizolastine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. It is used in the treatment of various allergic conditions. It relieves symptoms like itching, swelling and rashes. Mizolastine should be taken with or without food. The dose may vary depending on what you are taking it for. Take it as it has been prescribed by your doctor. You may need this medicine only on days you have symptoms, or you may need to take it every day to prevent symptoms from happening. If you stop taking it earlier than advised, your symptoms may come back. This medicine is generally very safe. As compared to other similar medications, it is much less likely to make you feel sleepy. But, it may cause some amount of dizziness, so do not drive or do anything that needs attention. Consult your doctor if it persists or worry you. Before taking it, you should tell your doctor if you have any problems with your liver or kidneys or with your heart. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult with their doctor before taking it. Avoid drinking alcohol as it can cause excessive drowsiness with this medicine. Mizolastine is an antihistaminic medication. It treats allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and rashes by blocking the effects of a chemical messenger (histamine) in the body.

Mechanism of action
Mizolastine, a non-sedating antihistamine, blocks histamine H1-receptors on effector cells of the GI tract, blood vessels and respiratory tract. It also has mast-cell stabilising properties.
Dosage
Adult Dose: Oral Allergic conditions Adult: 10 mg daily. Elderly: 10 mg daily. Child Dose: Oral Allergic conditions Child: >12 yr: 10 mg daily.
Administration
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Mizolastine may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Mizolastine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
[UNSAFE] Mizolastine may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Your doctor has prescribed Elina Tablet MR to help relieve allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and rashes. As compared to other similar medications, it is much less likely to make you feel sleepy. Be cautious while driving or doing anything that requires concentration as it can cause dizziness and sleepiness. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication as it may cause increased sleepiness. Stop taking Elina Tablet MR at least three days before taking an allergy test as it can affect the test results.
Contraindications
Significant cardiac or hepatic disease; electrolyte imbalance, particularly hypokalaemia; known or suspected QT prolongation. Clinically significant bradycardia.
Drug interactions
Antidepressants and anxiolytics may enhance sedative effect. Potent inhibitors of or substrates for the hepatic metabolism of mizolastine (e.g. cimetidine, ciclosporin, nifedipine) may alter its metabolism. Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias with drugs known to prolong the QT interval e.g. class I and III antiarryhthmics. Increased plasma concentrations with macrolide antibiotics and imidazole antifungals.
Food interactions
[SAFE] Consuming alcohol with Mizolastine does not cause any harmful side effects.
Use in pregnancy
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Mizolastine is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.
Use in lactation
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Mizolastine is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
Renal / hepatic impairment
[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] There is limited information available on the use of Mizolastine in patients with kidney disease. Please consult your doctor. [UNSAFE] Mizolastine is probably unsafe to use in patients with liver disease and should be avoided. Please consult your doctor.
