At a glance

Indapamide is a diuretic (water pill) used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure.

Indications
  • Essential hypertension

Pharmacology

Indapamide is an oral antihypertensive agent. The mechanism of its antihypertensive action is not fully understood, but both vascular and renal actions are involved. It reduces cardiac hypertrophy, reduces arterial wall thickening, prevents accumulation of embryonic fibronectin in coronary vessels, stimulates vasodilator eicosanoid formation through free radical scavenging, and interacts with renal carbonic anhydrase. Its renal site of action is the proximal segment of the distal tubule.
