At a glance

Benzydamine Mouth prep is a pain relieving and anti-inflammatory medicine used to relieve pain, discomfort, and inflammation of the mouth, gums, and throat.

Indications
  • Mouth/Throat Pain or irritation
  • Acute pharyngitis
  • Radiation-Associated Mucositis
Pharmacology

Benzydamine Hydrochloride predominantly acts by inhibiting the synthesis of pro inflammatory cytokines like tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) without largely affecting other pro inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, it is capable of a local anaesthetic effect that may be related to its capability for inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators like substance P.

Dosage

Mouth/Throat Pain, Acute pharyngitis: Rinse or gargle 15 ml of a 0.15% solution every 1½ to 3 hours until remission of pain (dilute with water if stinging occurs).

Radiation-Associated Mucositis: Gargle or rinse 15 mL in mouth (for 30 seconds, followed by expulsion) 3-4 times per day. Begin treatment 1 day prior to radiation therapy and continue daily during treatment.

Side effects
  • No common side effects seen
  • Mild burning sensation at application site (temporary)
