Pharmacology

Methyl salicylate blocks sodium channels for anesthetic effect; Menthol stimulates TRPM-8 receptors for cold sensation; Camphor acts as a counterirritant; Capsaicin depletes substance P for analgesic effect.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Topical):

  • Apply a small amount (tip of finger) to affected area 3-4 times daily
  • Do not use in children under 6 years
Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Allergic reaction
  • Stinging/burning/tingling sensation
  • Redness or irritation (especially on sensitive skin)
Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy: No known restrictions during pregnancy; however caution is advised.

Precautions & warnings
  • Do not use on injured or inflamed skin
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
  • Do not use in eczema, itchy rash, or aspirin allergy
  • Do not bandage tightly immediately after application
  • Do not use immediately after bath

Overdose not applicable (topical use).
