Calcipotriol is a topical medication used in the treatment of mild to moderate chronic stable plaque type psoriasis vulgaris. It is a synthetic form of vitamin D that reduces the rate of skin cell growth, controlling red, scaly patches on the skin.
Indications
- Chronic stable plaque type psoriasis vulgaris
Dosage
Adults: Apply to the affected area twice daily (morning and evening) as cream/ointment. Less frequent application may be indicated after the initial treatment period.
Maximum weekly dose: 100 g/week (cream).
Children (>12 years): Not to exceed 75 g/week.
Children (6-12 years): Not to exceed 50 g/week.
Scalp psoriasis (solution): Apply 1-2 times daily; maximum 60 mL/week.
Note: Discontinue after satisfactory improvement; may be reinstituted if recurrence occurs. Experience with use for more than 1 year is limited.
Side effects
Common side effects: Dry skin, skin irritation, itching, burning sensation, stinging sensation, redness of skin, rash.
Other: Photosensitivity reactions, skin discoloration, bullous eruption, skin exfoliation, contact dermatitis, allergic reactions.
Side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time.
Precautions & warnings
- Do not apply on the face (may cause skin irritation).
- Caution during pregnancy and lactation; do not apply on the chest area during breastfeeding (to avoid ingestion by infants).
- Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or UV light (inform your doctor if receiving UV treatment).
- Do not use in generalized pustular psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, or erythrodermic exfoliative psoriasis.
- Avoid in patients with known disorders of calcium metabolism.
- Experience in children is limited; use with caution.
