At a glance

Imipramine Hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant used for the treatment of depression and nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) in children.

Indications
  • Depressive illness
  • Nocturnal enuresis in children
Pharmacology

Imipramine works by inhibiting the neuronal reuptake of neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin. It binds the sodium-dependent serotonin transporter and sodium-dependent norepinephrine transporter, reducing reuptake. Increased concentration of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft produces knock-on effects in protein kinase signaling, contributing to changes in neurotransmission and brain physiology that relieve symptoms of depression.
