Description

Somatostatin is a medicine used in the treatment of acromegaly, carcinoid tumors, and bleeding esophageal varices. It works by blocking certain hormones in the body as well as decreasing the bleeding from food pipe by narrowing the blood vessels. Somatostatin is given by a healthcare professional. You should not self-administer this medicine at home. Your doctor will decide the dose and how often you should take them. You should use it regularly to get the most benefit from the medicine. Do not stop using the medicine even if you feel better unless the doctor tells you so. Using this medicine may cause few common side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, flatulence, and headache. Let your doctor know if any of these side effects do not go away or get worse. Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you have problems with your liver. You should also tell your doctor all the other medicines you are taking. Your doctor may monitor your blood glucose regularly while on treatment with this medicine. Somatostatin works by blocking the effects of certain natural hormones in the body such as serotonin and growth hormone. It also decreases bleeding from food pipe by constricting (narrowing) the blood vessels.

Mechanism of action

Somatostatin is a polypetide obtained synthetically or from the hypothalamus. It acts by inhibiting the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary. It also inhibits the release of thyrotrophin and corticotropin from the pituitary, glucagon and insulin from the pancreas. It also regulates duodenal and gastric secretions. It may also play a role in pain perception.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Intravenous Gastrointestinal haemorrhage Adult: Initially, 250 mcg as a bolus inj over 3-5 min, followed by a continuous infusion of 3.5 mcg/kg/hr until bleeding has ceased. May continue for a further 48-72 hr to prevent recurrent bleeding.

Administration

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. Kindly do not self administer.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Somatostatin, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] It is not known whether Somatostatin alters the ability to drive. Do not drive if you experience any symptoms that affect your ability to concentrate and react. Somatostatin helps treat acromegaly and certain hormone-producing tumors of stomach, liver, and pancreas. It is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein. It may temporarily cause pain at the site of injection. You can relieve this by gently rubbing the site of injection for a few seconds afterwards. When used long term, your doctor may monitor your thyroid function, gallbladder function, liver function and vitamin b12 levels regularly. Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines to control your blood pressure or if you are diabetic. Women who do not wish to conceive should practice an effective method for contraception while taking this medication.

Drug interactions

Lengthens the time of hexobarbital-induced sleep & potentiates the action of pentetrazol.

Food interactions

My doctor ask me to take vit k injection. I am 35 week pregnant. Why this injection is necessary? Your blood must be showing some abnormal results regarding clotting.
