Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used for the treatment of serious Gram-positive bacterial infections in hospitalized patients. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis.
Indications
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Infective endocarditis
- Clostridium difficile infection-associated diarrhea and colitis
Dosage
Adult Dose (Parenteral):
- General infections: 6 mg/kg on day 1; then 3 mg/kg/day
- Severe infections: 6 mg/kg every 12 hours (first 3 doses); then 6 mg/kg/day
- CAPD-associated peritonitis: 400 mg loading; add 20 mg/liter to dialysis fluid
Pediatric Dose (Parenteral):
- Loading: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours (3 doses); then 6-10 mg/kg/day
- Neonates: 16 mg/kg on day 1; then 8 mg/kg/day
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)
- Fever, itching, skin rash
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Dizziness, headache
Precautions & warnings
- Cross-hypersensitivity may occur in patients hypersensitive to vancomycin
- Caution with nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs
- Dose adjustment required in severe renal impairment
- Caution in pregnancy and lactation
