Teriparatide is a parathyroid hormone analog (PTH 1-34) used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men at high risk for fracture. It stimulates new bone formation.
Indications
- Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk for fracture
- Bone mass increase in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture
- Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men and women at high risk for fracture
Dosage
Adult Dose (SC):
- Recommended: 20 mcg subcutaneously once daily
- Treatment duration: Maximum 2 years in a lifetime

Common Side Effects:
- Arthralgia (joint pain)
- Pain
- Nausea
Other:
- Hypercalcemia (transient)
- Dizziness (orthostatic hypotension)
- Injection site reactions
Precautions & warnings
- Do not use in Paget's disease, pediatric/young adults with open epiphyses, or prior skeletal radiation therapy
- Do not use in bone metastases, history of skeletal malignancies, metabolic bone diseases other than osteoporosis, or hypercalcemic disorders
- Caution in active or recent urolithiasis
- Do not use for more than 2 years in a lifetime
