Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is used in the treatment of overactive bladder. It relieves urinary symptoms like frequent urination, urgent need to urinate and inability to control urination. Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is advised to take it in a dose and duration as per prescription. It should be taken in an empty stomach at least an hour before having a meal. Swallow the medicine as a whole without crushing or chewing it. You should not stop taking the medicine without consulting the doctor as it may lead to the worsening of your symptoms. The course of the treatment should be completed for better efficacy of the medicine. Some common side effects of this medicine are dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, headache, etc. To cope up with the side effects, you must drink plenty of water. It may also make you feel dizzy or sleepy or experience blurry vision, so it advised not to drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you. Consumption of alcohol must be avoided as it can aggravate the side effects. If any of the side effects bother you or persist, consult the doctor without delay. Before receiving the treatment, inform your doctor if you are on any medication for any other health condition. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your doctor prior to the treatment. Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is an antimuscarinic. It works by relaxing muscles of the urinary bladder and prevents frequent, urgent or uncontrolled urination.

Oxybutynin exerts direct antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscle by inhibiting the muscarinic action of acetylcholine. It exhibits moderate anticholinergic effect, but has potent antispasmodic effects on urinary smooth muscle.

Adult Dose: Oral Overactive bladder Adult: As extended-release preparation: Initially, 5 mg once daily increased by 5 mg every wk if necessary to max 30 mg daily. Child Dose: Oral Detrusor Overactivity, Nocturnal enuresis Bladder overactivity associated with a neurologic condition (eg, spina bifida) Child >6 years (extended-release): 5 mg/day PO initially; may be increased by 5 mg/day at weekly intervals; not to exceed 20 mg/day

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is to be taken empty stomach.

If you miss a dose of Oxybutynin Hydrochloride, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

This may affect your driving ability. Oxybutynin Hydrochloride treats symptoms of an overactive bladder by lowering the urge to urinate and controlling urination. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks as they can worsen your symptoms. It may cause dizziness and blurring of vision. Don't drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you. Dry mouth, dry eyes, and constipation may occur as a side effect. Maintain good oral hygiene, drink water frequently, chew sugarless gum, and wear contact lenses with caution. It can take up to 4 weeks before you see any improvement in your symptoms. Keep taking it as prescribed.

GI obstruction or atrophy, severe toxic megacolon, significant bladder outflow obstruction, glaucoma, urinary retention.

Co-administration with other anticholinergic drugs may cause undesirable increased anticholinergic effects. Additive sedation with CNS depressants and alcohol. Concentration may be increased by CYP3A4 inhibitirs (e.g. imidazole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics).

[UNSAFE] Oxybutynin Hydrochloride may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects to the developing baby; however, there are limited human studies.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Oxybutynin Hydrochloride is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
