Professor Rahman is a retired Professor of Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, at Bangladesh Health Services, and a former Consultant General Surgeon in the United Kingdom. He graduated with (MBBS) from Chittagong Medical College under the University of Dhaka with distinction and completed his internship at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Later he pursued his surgical training at the National Health Service in the UK and obtained his fellowship at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS). He then became a Consultant General Surgeon at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, United Kingdom. Professor Rahman was the first pediatric surgeon in Bangladesh's government sector-first at the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR), and then in Dhaka (presently BSM Medical University). He developed the pediatric surgery specialty (planning and implementation) at the first eight government medical colleges in Bangladesh and was actively involved in the planning stages of the Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital at Uttara, Dhaka. Professor Rahman was a consultant surgeon at Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in Dhaka before finally joining the Bangladesh Government Health Services as an Associate Professor of surgery. As a Professor of general and pediatric surgery at IPGMR, Professor Rahman was involved in the initial kidney transplant program, performing 54 live-related kidney transplants. He also worked as a consultant pediatric surgeon in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before retiring from Bangladesh Health Services in 2000 as professor and head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Dhaka Medical College. After retiring from government service, he joined the Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital as chief surgeon. Since 2006, he has worked in various hospitals in the UK. Professor Rahman is a Senior Commonwealth Fellow, sponsored by the British Council, an active Rotarian, and a Paul Harris Fellow.
