Dr. Shayamal Kumar Sarkar

is a renowned Neuro-Ophthalmologist in Bangladesh. He completed his MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka in 1999. He then completed his Masters of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He obtained Fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, Tamilnadu, India under the supervision of eminent Neuro-Opthalmologist of this subcontinent Professor Dr. Mahesh Kumar. He also completed Advanced training in Phaco Surgery from Disha Eye Hospital, Kolkata, India under supervision of Legendary Phaco Surgeon Dr. Arup Bhowmick.

Dr. Shayamal Kumar Sarkar has been working in Neuro-Ophthalmolgy Department in National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital since 2010 under supervision of Professor Dr. Lutfor Rahman. He was also working as a Registrar and Resident Surgeon in same institute for long time with good academic and clinical reputation..

Now Dr Sarkar is working as the Head and Chief Consultant of the Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology in National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital, the Apex Eye Institute of Eye care services in Govt. level of Bangladesh.

He is an expert in diagnosis and management of different varieties of Neuro-Ophthalmological disorder of the Eye and Brain specially Optic Neuritis, Ischaemic, Toxic, Traumtic, Hereditary with all varieties of Optic Neuropathy, Cranial Nerve Palsies, Myasthenia Gravis with all varieties of ocular motility disorder, Pupillary disorders, Paediatric and Adult Neurological disorders with ocular concerns. He uses advanced modalities of treatment in Optic Neuritis, Toxic & Traumatic optic neuropathy and ocular motility disorders like Intravenous, Intramuscular (Inj. Botox), Subcutaneous (Inj. Erythropoitin) immunosuppressives, and biologics.

Dr. Shayamal K Sarkar is also active in research and published several papers in reputed journals. He regularly attends at various eye conferences at home and abroad and runs instruction courses for Ophthalmologists. He also delivered lecture as a guest speaker in Neuro-Ophthalmological conferences at home abroad.

He has special interest in teaching, education and community outreach programs.
