Professor Dr. Istiaq Ahmed (Dipu) graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1998. He joined in Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) in May 2003. Thereafter he worked in Upazilla and District level hospital of Barisal division for about 3 years. In 2006 he started working in cardiac surgery department of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD). He obtained MS (Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery) in January 2009 from NICVD under University of Dhaka. He became resident surgeon (RS) cardiac surgery of NICVD in 2011. He was promoted as Assistant Professor (Regular) in 2013. He started running an independent cardiac unit in March 2015. Thereafter he was chosen and transferred to Dhaka Medical College on November 2016 to develop and start a new cardiac surgery department. He successfully accomplished the goal and started a new cardiac surgery department in July 2019. He is the founder chief cardiac surgeon of DMCH. He created a history by performing the first ever open heart surgery of DMCH in 10th July 2019. Now it’s a well-established cardiac Centre performing all types of cardiac surgical procedures successfully. Meanwhile he was promoted as Associate Professor in 2017 and became head of the department (HOD). By this time, he trained from Fortis Escorts Heart Centre (New Delhi) (Fellow WHO) and Medanta the Medi city (Haryana- New Delhi). He already performed more than 2000 cardiovascular cases which includes: Cardiac cases-- All types of CABG (like Off pump, total arterial, MIDCAB), valve repair and replacement (MVR, AVR, DVR), congenital cardiac anomalies, intracardiac Myxoma/ thrombus removal, combined procedure like CABG with valve repair/ replacement, all types of vascular surgery like: Aorto bi femoral Y graft bypass, Femoro- femoral bypass, Femoro-popliteal bypass, Excision of complicated AVM, Removal of IVC Tumour/ thrombus, Varicose vein surgery, all types of A-V fistula for dialysis. He had around 20 publications in his credit. He is now working in DMCH as Associate Professor and Head of cardiac surgery department and also involved in teaching and training of postgraduate students of DMCH. He is the Organizing Secretary of BACVTS- (Bangladesh Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons) and Vice President of CSSB (Cardiac Surgeon Society of Bangladesh). He is also elected Joint Secretary of Teacher’s association of Dhaka Medical College.
