Pharmacology
Supplies essential amino acids via keto-analogues, reusing nitrogen to reduce urea formation and alleviate uremic toxicity.
Mechanism of action
Transamination of keto-analogues using non-essential nitrogen groups to form essential amino acids without hyperfiltration.
Dosage
Adults: 4 to 8 tablets three times a day during meals. Swallow whole without chewing. Used when GFR is between 5 and 15 mL/min.
Administration
Oral administration during meals, swallow whole.
Missed dose
Take as soon as remembered.
Side effects
Hypercalcemia may develop. Regular monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels required.
