Description

Sterile aqueous solution of essential and non-essential amino acids, glucose, and electrolytes designed to achieve positive nitrogen balance and provide TPN.

Indications

Indicated as a source of amino acids, glucose, and electrolytes in adult and pediatric patients needing IV nutrition.

Pharmacology

Provides nitrogen sources, promotes protein synthesis and wound healing, and reduces endogenous protein catabolism.

Mechanism of action

Supplies crystalline amino acids and dextrose intravenously to maintain positive nitrogen balance and meet energy needs.

Dosage

Adults: 0.10-0.25 g nitrogen/kg/day (11-27 ml/kg/day), 1000-2000 ml per 24 hours infused slowly. Infants and children: max 30 ml/kg body weight/day.

Administration

Slow intravenous infusion.

Missed dose

Administered under medical supervision.

Side effects

Nausea, vomiting, flushing, sweating during rapid infusion, thrombophlebitis, and transient liver test increases.

Precautions & warnings

Use with caution in diabetes, severe heart failure, or renal impairment. Monitor phenylalanine in premature infants.

Contraindications

Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism, severe liver damage, severe uremia without dialysis, hyperosmolar nonketotic coma, hypersensitivity.
