Pharmacology
Inhibits plasminogen activators and exhibits antiplasmin activity to prevent blood clot breakdown.
Mechanism of action
Blocks the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, stabilizing fibrin clots.
Dosage
Average dose 8-16 g/day divided every 4-6 hours; up to 20-25 g in 24 hours for severe cases. IV infusion guidelines apply.
Administration
Can be given orally or intravenously with suitable dilution.
Missed dose
Take or administer as scheduled.
Side effects
Mild muscle pain, weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, nasal congestion, vision changes, injection site reactions.
Precautions & warnings
Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 18 years.
Contraindications
Active intravascular clotting process or DIC without concomitant heparin.
Drug interactions
Use with caution alongside other hemostatic or thrombolytic agents.
Food interactions
Can be taken with or without food; take with food to prevent GI upset.
Use in pregnancy
