Antihemophilic Factor [Factor VIII]

Replacement therapy supplying essential clotting factor VIII for maintenance of hemostasis and clot formation in hemophilia A patients.

Treatment and prophylaxis of hemorrhagic episodes in patients with hemophilia A, and prophylaxis in severe hemophilia A.

Coagulation Factor VIII

Required for clot formation and maintenance of hemostasis by activating factor X in conjunction with activated factor IX.

Participates in the intrinsic coagulation pathway to convert prothrombin to thrombin and form stable fibrin clots.

Mild-moderate hemorrhage: 10-15 IU/kg. Serious/minor surgery: 15-25 IU/kg initially then 10-15 IU/kg q8-12h. Severe hemorrhage/major surgery: 40-50 IU/kg initially then 20-25 IU/kg q8-12h. Prophylaxis: 10-50 IU/kg every 2-3 days.

Intravenous infusion. Warm dried concentrate and diluent to room temperature before reconstitution.

Administered under medical supervision.

Chills, chest tightness, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, stinging at infusion site, vasomotor reactions with rapid infusion.

Risk of intravascular hemolysis in blood groups A, B, or AB receiving high/repeated doses. Risk of viral transmission. Monitor platelet counts.

Anaphylactic or severe systemic reaction to factor VIII or von Willebrand factor preparations.

Rapid infusion may trigger vasomotor or allergic reactions.

Not applicable.

Pregnancy Category C. Use if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus.

Store between 2-8°C. Use within 3 hours of reconstitution; do not refrigerate after reconstitution.
