Antihemophilic Factor [Factor VIII] is a coagulation factor used to treat and prevent bleeding episodes in hemophilia A.
Indications
Treatment and prophylaxis of hemorrhagic episodes in patients with hemophilia A, and prophylaxis in severe hemophilia A.
Dosage
Mild-moderate hemorrhage: 10-15 IU/kg. Serious/minor surgery: 15-25 IU/kg initially then 10-15 IU/kg q8-12h. Severe hemorrhage/major surgery: 40-50 IU/kg initially then 20-25 IU/kg q8-12h. Prophylaxis: 10-50 IU/kg every 2-3 days.
Side effects
Chills, chest tightness, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, stinging at infusion site, vasomotor reactions with rapid infusion.
Precautions & warnings
Risk of intravascular hemolysis in blood groups A, B, or AB receiving high/repeated doses. Risk of viral transmission. Monitor platelet counts.
