Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate Nasal prep

Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate Nasal prep is a combination of two medicines: Fluticasone Propionate and Azelastine, which relieves sneezing and runny nose caused due to allergies (allergic rhinitis). Fluticasone Propionate is a steroid which works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation (swelling) and irritation in the nose. Azelastine is an antiallergic which relieves allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing.

The recommended dosage is 1 spray each nostril twice daily for adults and children 6 years and older. Common side effects include taste change (metallic taste), headache, and nosebleeds.

Azelastine Hydrochloride exhibits histamine H1-receptor antagonist activity in isolated tissues. The major metabolite, desmethylazelastine, also possesses H1-receptor antagonist activity.

Fluticasone Propionate is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory activity. Corticosteroids have been shown to have a wide range of effects on multiple cell types (e.g., mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes) and mediators (e.g., histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines) involved in inflammation.

Azelastine blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergy symptoms (sneezing, itching, runny nose). Fluticasone reduces inflammation and swelling in the nose by inhibiting inflammatory cells and mediators. Together, they effectively control allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Adult: 1 spray each nostril twice daily.

Pediatric (6 years and older): 1 spray each nostril twice daily.

Important: The doctor will determine the duration and dosage. Dose may be adjusted as needed.

Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover. Gently blow the nose to clear the nostrils. Close one nostril and insert the nasal applicator into the open nostril. Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the spray upright. Breathe in through your nose and press the applicator once to release a spray. Breathe out through your mouth. Repeat for the other nostril. Clean the applicator at least once a week.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

• No known contraindication; however, avoid if allergic to azelastine or fluticasone

• CNS Depressants and Alcohol: Additive effects (increased drowsiness and CNS impairment)
• Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir): May increase fluticasone plasma concentration

No food interactions known.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Azelastine + Fluticasone Nasal Spray may be unsafe during pregnancy (Category C). Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Use only if potential benefit justifies the risk.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Azelastine + Fluticasone Nasal Spray is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. However, caution is advised.

Safety and effectiveness in patients less than 6 years of age have not been established. Patients 6 years and older: same as adult dose.

No specific dose adjustment needed for elderly patients, but caution is advised.

Systemic absorption with topical nasal application is minimal, so no dose adjustment is needed for renal or hepatic impairment.

Azelastine overdose may cause increased somnolence. Chronic fluticasone overdose may cause symptoms of hypercorticism.

Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not store in the refrigerator. Keep out of reach of children.
