Betamethasone + Calcipotriol topical

Betamethasone 0.05% + Calcipotriol 0.005% topical is a prescription ointment/suspension used for the treatment of plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris and plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body. This combination contains Betamethasone (a potent topical corticosteroid) and Calcipotriol (a vitamin D derivative).

Betamethasone provides prompt, marked and prolonged anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive effects. Calcipotriol induces differentiation and suppresses proliferation of keratinocytes, thus reversing the abnormal keratinocyte changes in psoriasis.

Common side effects include folliculitis, burning sensation, itching, and rash.

Betamethasone Dipropionate is a potent topically-active corticosteroid producing prompt, marked and prolonged anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, vasoconstrictive and immunosuppressive properties. These effects can be enhanced under occlusive conditions due to increased penetration of stratum corneum (by approximately a factor of 10).

Calcipotriol is a non-steroidal antipsoriatic agent, derived from vitamin D. It exhibits a vitamin D-like effect by competing for the 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor. Calcipotriol induces differentiation and suppresses proliferation of keratinocytes, thus reversing the abnormal keratinocyte changes in psoriasis.

Betamethasone reduces inflammation, redness and itching, while Calcipotriol reduces the overproduction of skin cells that form plaques. Together, they help control psoriasis symptoms.

Ointment: Apply topically to the affected area once daily. Maximum daily dose: 15 g. Maximum weekly dose: 100 g. Treated area should not exceed 30% of body surface. Treatment should be limited to four-week periods with Calcipotriol used alone for one month between periods as needed.

Suspension (Spray): Apply once daily to the affected areas and gently rub in. Treatment may be continued for up to 8 weeks. Maximum weekly dose: 100 g. Shake before use.

Children: Not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age.

For external use only. Use in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply a small amount of ointment/spray and gently massage. Not for oral, ophthalmic or intravaginal use. Protect treated areas from direct sunlight and UV-light with clothing.

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

• If hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria occurs, discontinue until calcium metabolism normalizes
• Topical corticosteroids may cause HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, and unmask latent diabetes
• Not recommended for use on face, axillae, groin or where atrophy is present
• Children may be more susceptible to systemic toxicity from topical corticosteroids
• Caution during pregnancy and lactation

• Hypersensitivity to betamethasone, calcipotriol, or any component
• Known disorders of calcium metabolism
• Severe renal insufficiency or severe hepatic disorders

• Other steroids: Additive adverse effects

No food-related restrictions (topical application).

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk. It is not known whether topical administration results in sufficient systemic absorption. Caution is advised in nursing mothers.

Not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age.

No dose adjustment needed for elderly patients, but caution is advised.

Overuse may cause HPA axis suppression and calcium metabolism disorders. Consult a doctor if symptoms occur.
