Description
Betaxolol 0.5% Eye prep is a beta blocker used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. It decreases the production of aqueous humour, thereby lowering eye pressure and reducing the risk of vision loss. Always wash hands before use, remove contact lenses, and avoid touching the dropper tip. Common side effects include eye discomfort, blurred vision, watery eyes, and headache. Do not use if you have asthma, severe COPD, or serious heart conditions.

Pharmacology
Betaxolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker which has greater affinity for β1-receptors and little effect on β2-receptors. It causes reduction of intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humour.
Mechanism of action
Betaxolol reduces intraocular pressure by decreasing aqueous humour production. It blocks β1-adrenergic receptors, reducing the amount of fluid inside the eye.

Administration
For external use only. Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Eye discomfort, Headache, Watery eyes, Blurred vision.
Precautions & warnings
Betaxolol may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Inform your doctor if you have lung or heart diseases. Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute after instillation. Stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 minutes. Use within 4 weeks of opening.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, Sinus bradycardia, Cardiogenic shock, Overt cardiac failure, Pregnancy.
Drug interactions
Increased risk of bradycardia with digitalis glycosides. May cause mydriasis with epinephrine. Potential additive effect with oral Ca channel blockers, alpha-blockers, antiarrhythmics, parasympathomimetics, guanethidine. Increased risk of myocardial depression and hypotension with peripheral muscle relaxants.
