Description
Bromhexine Hydrochloride is an oral mucolytic agent. It disrupts the structure of acid mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucoid sputum and produces less viscous mucus, which makes expectoration easier. It is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed into the body tissues.
Bromhexine is indicated in the treatment of tracheobronchitis, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, bronchitis with emphysema, bronchitis with bronchospasm, chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions, and pneumoconiosis.

Pharmacology
Bromhexine Hydrochloride is an oral mucolytic agent. It disrupts the structure of acid mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucoid sputum and produces less viscous mucus, which makes expectoration easier. It is rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed into the body tissues.
Mechanism of action
Bromhexine disrupts the structure of acid mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucoid sputum, reducing mucus viscosity, making it thinner and easier to expectorate. It also increases serous secretion from bronchial glands.
Dosage
Adults and Children over 12 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoons) 3 times daily.
Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) 3 times daily.
Children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) 3 times daily.
Children under 2 years: Not recommended without medical advice.
Tablet dosage (Adults): 8-16 mg 3 times daily.
Tablet dosage (5-10 years): 4 mg 3 times daily.
Tablet dosage (>10 years): 8-16 mg 3 times daily.
Syrup dosage (Adults): Initially 4 teaspoonfuls 3 times daily, then as required.
Do not use for more than 14 days without doctor's advice.
Administration
Take with food. Use a special dose-measuring spoon or cup for syrup (do not use a regular table spoon). Swallow tablets whole; do not chew or crush. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
- Since mucolytics may disrupt gastric mucosa, use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease.
- Care is also advisable in asthmatic patients.
- Clearance may be reduced in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
- Do not use for more than 14 days without your doctor's advice.
- Caution during pregnancy; avoid during breastfeeding.
- May cause dizziness; know your response before driving.

Food interactions
It is not known whether it is safe to consume alcohol with Bromhexine Hydrochloride. Please consult your doctor.
Use in pregnancy
Safe to use during pregnancy (Category A). Most studies have shown low or no risk to the developing baby. Special care is recommended; benefits should be assessed against possible effects.

Use in lactation
Information regarding use during breastfeeding is not available. Bromhexine is expected to enter breast milk; therefore, it is not recommended for lactating mothers.
Pediatric use
Under 2 years: Not recommended without medical advice. 2-6 years: 2.5 ml 3 times daily; 6-12 years: 5 ml 3 times daily.
Geriatric use
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly, but caution advised.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Hepatic impairment: Use with caution in severe liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Consult your doctor if overdose is suspected.
Storage conditions
Store in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
