Butamirate Citrate is a centrally acting cough suppressant used for dry (non-productive) cough. It is neither chemically nor pharmacologically related to opium alkaloids and is non-sedating.
Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough. It is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration (maximum concentration reached within 9 hours with sustained-release tablets). It is highly protein-bound with a plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours. Its active metabolites also have antitussive action.

Pharmacology
Butamirate Citrate is a centrally acting cough suppressant not related to opium alkaloids. It acts directly on the cough center in the brain to suppress the cough reflex. It is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration (maximum concentration reached within 9 hours with sustained-release tablets), highly protein-bound, and has a plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours. Its active metabolites also have antitussive action.
Mechanism of action
Butamirate Citrate acts directly on the cough center in the medulla oblongata, inhibiting the initiation and conduction of the cough reflex, thereby suppressing dry cough.
Dosage
Adults (Tablet 50 mg): 2-3 tablets daily (at 8-12 hour intervals).
Adults (Syrup): 15 ml 4 times daily.
Adolescents (>12 years, Tablet): 1-2 tablets daily.
Adolescents (Syrup): 15 ml 3 times daily.
Children (6-12 years, Syrup): 10 ml 3 times daily.
Children (3-6 years, Syrup): 5 ml 3 times daily.
Infants (2 months-1 year, Pediatric Drops): 0.50 ml (10 drops) 4 times daily.
Infants (1-3 years, Pediatric Drops): 0.75 ml (15 drops) 4 times daily.
Note: Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12 years).
Administration
Take as advised by your doctor. Swallow tablets whole; do not chew or crush. Use a special dose-measuring spoon or cup for syrup. Use the provided dropper for pediatric drops.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Butamirate Citrate is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, the following side effects may occur:
• Skin rash
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Dizziness/Vertigo
These reactions usually resolve after dose reduction or treatment withdrawal.
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid concomitant use with expectorants (may lead to mucus retention in the airways, increasing risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections).
- Do not use during the first trimester of pregnancy; use with caution during the second and third trimesters.
- Consider the benefits and risks during breastfeeding.
- Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12 years).
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to butamirate citrate or any ingredient
Drug interactions
- Concomitant use with expectorants: Avoid (may lead to mucus retention and increase risk of bronchospasm).
Food interactions
No specific food restrictions.
Use in pregnancy
Do not use during the first trimester of pregnancy. May be used during the second and third trimesters with caution and under medical supervision.
Use in lactation
Adequate data on use during breastfeeding is not available. The benefits and risks should be carefully weighed by the physician.

1-3 years: 0.75 ml (15 drops) 4 times daily
3-6 years (Syrup): 5 ml 3 times daily

Geriatric use
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly; consult your physician.
Renal / hepatic impairment
No special precautions required for patients with liver or kidney impairment; consult your physician.
Overdose effects
Overdose symptoms: Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, hypotension. Standard emergency procedures: activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and standard cardio-respiratory resuscitation.

Keep away from light and moisture, store below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
