Butamirate Citrate is a centrally acting cough suppressant (antitussive) used in the treatment of dry (non-productive) cough, whooping cough, and pre- and post-operative cough. It works by directly acting on the cough center in the brain to suppress the cough reflex.

Indications
  • Dry (non-productive) cough
  • Whooping cough
  • Pre- and post-operative cough
  • Sedation prior to bronchoscopy and surgical procedures
  • Cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections (tracheitis, laryngitis, bronchitis)
Dosage

Adults (Tablet 50 mg): 2-3 tablets daily (at 8-12 hour intervals).

Adults (Syrup): 15 ml 4 times daily.

Adolescents (>12 years, Tablet): 1-2 tablets daily.

Adolescents (Syrup): 15 ml 3 times daily.

Children (6-12 years, Syrup): 10 ml 3 times daily.

Children (3-6 years, Syrup): 5 ml 3 times daily.

Infants (2 months-1 year, Pediatric Drops): 0.50 ml (10 drops) 4 times daily.

Infants (1-3 years, Pediatric Drops): 0.75 ml (15 drops) 4 times daily.

Note: Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12 years).

Side effects

Butamirate Citrate is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, the following side effects may occur:
• Skin rash
• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Dizziness/Vertigo

These reactions usually resolve after dose reduction or treatment withdrawal.

Precautions & warnings
  • Avoid concomitant use with expectorants (may lead to mucus retention in the airways, increasing risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections).
  • Do not use during the first trimester of pregnancy; use with caution during the second and third trimesters.
  • Consider the benefits and risks during breastfeeding.
  • Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12 years).
