Description
Butenafine 1% Topical is an antifungal cream used for fungal skin infections. It is a benzylamine antifungal that inhibits the enzyme squalene monooxygenase, decreasing sterol biosynthesis.
Butenafine prevents fungal growth and spread by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, which is essential for the fungal cell wall. It is effective in treating ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and tinea versicolor.

Pharmacology
Butenafine is a benzylamine antifungal that inhibits squalene monooxygenase, reducing sterol biosynthesis. It prevents the production of ergosterol, essential for the fungal cell wall, thereby inhibiting fungal growth.
Mechanism of action
Butenafine inhibits squalene monooxygenase, reducing ergosterol synthesis in fungi, which is essential for maintaining cell wall integrity. This leads to inhibition of fungal growth and spread.
Dosage
Adults and children 12 years and older:
Tinea pedis (Athlete's foot): Apply 1% cream twice daily for 7 days. Not to exceed 4 weeks.
Tinea corporis (Ringworm), Tinea cruris (Jock itch), and Tinea versicolor: Apply once/twice daily for 2 weeks. Not to exceed 4 weeks.
Note: Follow the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Do not use longer than recommended.
Administration
For external use only. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply a thin layer of cream. Wash your hands after applying (unless hands are the affected area). Avoid contact with eyes, ears, nose, or mouth (if accidental contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water).
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next application. Do not double the dose.
Side effects

These side effects are usually not serious and often resolve over time.
Precautions & warnings
- Use only in the prescribed dose and duration; do not apply more often or longer than directed (may increase risk of side effects).
- Wash the affected area with soap and water and dry well before each application.
- Avoid contact with eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.
- Inform your doctor if you notice changes in skin color or burning sensation.
- Caution during pregnancy and lactation.
