Mechanism of action

Calcium helps maintain bone mineralization and density and ensures normal nerve and muscle function. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, aids in collagen synthesis and plays a vital role in fighting infections. The combined action ensures bone health, immunity and overall wellness.

Diabetic patients should consider sugar content.

Contraindications

Hypercalcemia (myeloma, bone metastases or other malignant bone disease), sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D overdosage, severe renal failure, severe hypercalciuria, hypersensitivity to any component.

Drug interactions

Digoxin: calcium may enhance cardiac effects and precipitate digitalis intoxication. Thiazide diuretics: increased risk of hypercalcemia and milk-alkali syndrome. Decreases absorption of tetracyclines, atenolol, iron, quinolones, alendronate, sodium fluoride, zinc and calcium-channel blockers. Decreased absorption with corticosteroids. Enhanced absorption with vitamin D. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption.

Food interactions

Calcium and vitamin C supplements can be taken with or without food. Absorption of calcium is enhanced when taken with fatty foods.

Use in pregnancy

Calcium and vitamin C requirements increase during pregnancy. This tablet can be used during pregnancy. Oral calcium has shown no increase in teratogenic risk to the fetus. Use under medical supervision.

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.

Use in lactation

Calcium is excreted in breast milk, but concentration is unlikely to produce adverse effects on the neonate. Vitamin C can be safely used during breastfeeding.

Pediatric use

Children: 3-7 years: 1/2 tablet daily; above 7 years: 1 tablet daily. Consult a pediatrician.

Geriatric use

Elderly (especially homebound) have higher risk of calcium and vitamin C deficiency, making this supplement particularly beneficial.

Renal / hepatic impairment

Contraindicated in severe renal failure. Caution required in mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria. In patients with severe renal impairment receiving aluminium-containing preparations, use with caution as citrate salts may increase aluminium absorption.

Overdose effects

Symptoms of overdose: gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea. Serious overdose may cause hypercalcemia (especially in patients receiving high doses of vitamin D).
