Coal Tar + Precipitated Sulpher + Salicylic Acid

Coal Tar + Precipitated Sulphur + Salicylic Acid is a combination scalp ointment used for the treatment of common scaly skin disorders of the scalp such as psoriasis, scalp eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and dandruff. Coal tar has antipruritic, keratoplastic and keratolytic properties. Sulphur is a keratolytic, mild antiseptic, mild antifungal and parasiticide. Salicylic acid has a potent keratolytic action and a slight antiseptic action when applied topically. It softens and destroys the stratum corneum by increasing endogenous hydration which causes the horny layer of the skin to swell, soften, and then desquamate.

Coal tar has antipruritic, keratoplastic and keratolytic properties. It slows down excessive epidermal cell turnover. Precipitated Sulphur is converted to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which kills bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Salicylic acid softens and destroys the stratum corneum by increasing endogenous hydration which causes the horny layer of the skin to swell, soften, and then desquamate.

Coal tar slows down excessive epidermal cell turnover; Sulphur provides antimicrobial and antifungal effects; Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells through keratolytic action.

Adult Dose: Apply to affected areas of the scalp and remove after one hour using warm water and shampoo. Repeat daily for 3-7 days until control is obtained. With mild scaliness use intermittently as necessary (e.g., once a week).

Pediatric Dose (>12 years & Elderly): As in adults.

Pediatric Dose (6-12 years): To be used under medical supervision only.

Pediatric Dose (<6 years): Not recommended.

For external use only. Pierce the tube membrane by inverting the cap. Affix the scalp applicator. Part the hair and apply a thin ribbon of ointment to affected areas. Avoid contact with eyes. Gently rub in and leave for approximately one hour. Wash hands immediately. After one hour remove by showering or rinsing with warm water and shampoo.

If you miss a dose of this ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Stinging/burning of scalp
• Desquamation (peeling)
• Skin irritation
• Inflammation of hair follicles
• Discoloration or staining from coal tar
• Photosensitivity (rare)

• Use with caution on the face, near eyes and mucous membranes.
• Do not apply to genital or rectal areas.
• Avoid use in patients with exacerbation of psoriasis.
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and sunlamps for at least 24-72 hours after application.
• May stain clothes and hair.
• If undergoing Goeckerman treatment, remove all coal tar preparation from skin before exposure to radiation.
• Discontinue use if irritation develops; consult doctor if no improvement after 4 weeks.

• Application to inflamed or broken skin

No food interactions have been found or established.

Pregnancy Category C. To be used at the discretion of the physician during pregnancy.

Elderly dose: As in adults.

For topical use, no dose adjustment is required in renal or hepatic impairment.

Overdose is extremely unlikely. If necessary, remove medication by washing with warm water and treat symptomatically.

Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
