Coal Tar + Precipitated Sulphur + Salicylic Acid is a combination scalp ointment used for the treatment of common scaly skin disorders of the scalp such as psoriasis, scalp eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and dandruff.
Indications
- Scalp psoriasis
- Scalp eczema
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Dandruff
Dosage
Adult Dose: Apply to affected areas of the scalp and remove after one hour using warm water and shampoo. Repeat daily for 3-7 days until control is obtained. With mild scaliness use intermittently as necessary (e.g., once a week).
Pediatric Dose (>12 years & Elderly): As in adults.
Pediatric Dose (6-12 years): To be used under medical supervision only.
Pediatric Dose (<6 years): Not recommended.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Stinging/burning of scalp
- Desquamation (peeling)
- Skin irritation
- Inflammation of hair follicles
- Discoloration or staining from coal tar
- Photosensitivity (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- Use with caution on the face, near eyes and mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to genital or rectal areas.
- Avoid use in patients with exacerbation of psoriasis.
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and sunlamps for at least 24-72 hours after application.
- May stain clothes and hair.
- If undergoing Goeckerman treatment, remove all coal tar preparation from skin before exposure to radiation.
- Discontinue use if irritation develops; consult doctor if no improvement after 4 weeks.
