Crotamiton + Permethrin

Crotamiton + Permethrin is an antipruritic and scabicide medicine. It is used to treat scabies, a condition where tiny insects infest and irritate your skin. It works by killing the mites and their eggs. It is also used to relieve itching and skin irritation. Permethrin is a photostable synthetic pyrethroid that possesses a broad spectrum of insecticidal activity and low mammalian toxicity. Crotamiton is used to treat scabies infection and is also used to relieve the itching of certain skin conditions.

Permethrin is a photostable synthetic pyrethroid that possesses a broad spectrum of insecticidal activity and low mammalian toxicity. Crotamiton is used to treat scabies infection and is also used to relieve the itching of certain skin conditions. Permethrin is rapidly absorbed by insects via mouth, respiratory tract or the intact cuticle. Although the primary target tissue is the nervous system, insects are not killed by dysfunction of a single organ but by a complex series of reactions in various organs, such as metabolic exhaustion and paralysis of the nervous system. Permethrin primarily affects sodium channels in the nerve membrane and causes prolongation of the transient increase in sodium permeability associated with membrane depolarization.

Crotamiton has scabicidal and antipruritic action against Sarcoptes scabiei. Permethrin is a pyrethroid pediculocide and scabicide. It causes paralysis and death of the pest by inhibiting sodium ion influx through nerve cell membrane channels delaying repolarisation.

Adult Dose: Apply once. If necessary, a second application may be given not less than 7 days after the initial application.

Pediatric Dose (2 months-2 years): Apply over whole body under doctor supervision.

Treatment Duration: Usually apply daily in the evening for 3-5 days.

This medicine is for external use only. The skin should be clean, cool and dry before application.

Adults & children over 2 years: Apply to the whole body from the neck down, rubbing lightly until the lotion disappears. Include all skin surfaces, such as between fingers and toes, under nails and on soles of feet.

Babies under 2 years: Apply to face, neck, ears and scalp as well, only avoiding the area immediately around eyes and mouth. Leave on for at least 8 hours before washing off.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning, stinging or tingling sensation
• Erythematous rash
• Itching
• Dry skin
• Paresthesia

• For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes.
• Scabies is highly contagious; other family members should also use it preventively.
• Not recommended during the first three months of pregnancy.
• Nursing mothers should avoid applying it in the area of the nipples.
• Corticosteroid treatment should be withheld prior to treatment with Permethrin and Crotamiton lotion (risk of exacerbating scabies infestation by reducing immune response to the mite).

• Known allergy to permethrin, its components, other pyrethroids or pyrethrins.

Treatment of eczematous-like reactions with corticosteroids should be withheld prior to treatment with Permethrin and Crotamiton lotion, as there is a risk of exacerbating the scabies infestation by reducing the immune response to the mite.

No food interactions have been found or established.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Crotamiton + Permethrin may be unsafe to use during pregnancy, especially during the first three months.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Crotamiton + Permethrin is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. The baby's skin should not come into direct contact with the treated area. Avoid applying in the area of the nipples.

Pediatric dose: 2 months-2 years: Apply over whole body under doctor supervision (avoid area around eyes and mouth). Patients >2 months of age can use the lotion.

Limited information is available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.

For topical use, no dose adjustment is required in renal or hepatic impairment.

There are no reports of overdosage with Permethrin and Crotamiton lotion. Excessive application might result in localized adverse reactions or more severe skin reactions.

Keep out of reach of children. Store in a dry place, below 25°C temperature and protected from light.
