Dextromethorphan Polistirex Extended Release Suspension

Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant which has a central action on the cough centre in the medulla. Polistirex forms a matrix around the Dextromethorphan particles, which slows down the dissolution of the Dextromethorphan in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to a gradual and prolonged release into the bloodstream. The duration of action is 12 hours with extended release suspension dosage form.

• Chronic dry cough
• Unproductive cough
• Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep

Dextromethorphan acts on the medullary cough centre to suppress cough; Polistirex matrix ensures prolonged release of dextromethorphan, maintaining efficacy for up to 12 hours.

Adults and children ≥12 years: 10 ml every 12 hours (max 20 ml in 24 hours).
Children (6-12 years): 5 ml every 12 hours (max 10 ml in 24 hours).
Children (4-6 years): 2.5 ml every 12 hours (max 5 ml in 24 hours).
Children under 4 years: Not recommended.

Measure with a measuring cup, shake well before use. May be taken with or without food.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Rare: Nausea, dizziness.
Overdose: Excitement, confusion, respiratory depression.

Use with caution in patients with liver disease (dextromethorphan is extensively metabolized in the liver). Do not use with MAOIs.

Concomitant use with MAOIs.

Phenelzine: Two fatal interactions have been reported with therapeutic doses of phenelzine and dextromethorphan.

Can be taken with or without food.

Avoid during the first three months of pregnancy.

No information is available on secretion of dextromethorphan into breast milk; nursing mothers should be advised not to take the drug.

Not recommended for children under 4 years of age.

No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

Caution is advised in patients with liver disease.

Overdose may cause excitement, confusion, and respiratory depression. Seek medical attention.

Store below 30°C in dry place. Keep away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
