Dextromethorphan Polistirex Extended Release Suspension is a long-acting cough suppressant used for the treatment of dry cough.
Indications
- Chronic dry cough
- Unproductive cough
- Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep
Pharmacology
Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant which has a central action on the cough centre in the medulla. Polistirex forms a matrix around the Dextromethorphan particles, which slows down the dissolution of the Dextromethorphan in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to a gradual and prolonged release into the bloodstream. The duration of action is 12 hours.
Dosage
Adults and children ≥12 years: 10 ml every 12 hours (max 20 ml in 24 hours).
Children (6-12 years): 5 ml every 12 hours (max 10 ml in 24 hours).
Children (4-6 years): 2.5 ml every 12 hours (max 5 ml in 24 hours).
Children under 4 years: Not recommended.
Side effects
Rare: Nausea, dizziness.
Overdose: Excitement, confusion, respiratory depression.
Use in pregnancy
Avoid during the first three months of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Precautions & warnings
Use with caution in patients with liver disease (dextromethorphan is extensively metabolized in the liver). Do not use with MAOIs.
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause excitement, confusion, and respiratory depression. Seek medical attention.
Storage conditions
Store below 30°C in dry place. Keep away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
