Used for dietary supplementation and deficiencies of iron, folic acid, zinc and vitamin B, especially during pregnancy and lactation. Dose: 1 capsule daily, 2 capsules daily in severe cases. Take on empty stomach for maximum absorption.

Pharmacology

Iron is essential for hemoglobin formation and effective erythropoiesis. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and maintenance of normal erythropoiesis. Zinc is a cofactor in over 100 enzymes and plays a role in DNA synthesis. Vitamin B plays a role in synthesis and maintenance of coenzyme A.

Mechanism of action

Iron is essential for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and erythropoiesis. Zinc is an enzyme cofactor and plays a role in DNA synthesis. Vitamin B is essential for coenzyme A synthesis and metabolism.

Dosage

Adult Dose: One capsule daily. In more severe cases, 2 capsules a day may be required.

Administration

Oral capsule. For maximum absorption take on empty stomach, but may take with or after meals to minimize GI irritation.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.

Precautions & warnings
  • Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload (hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, red cell aplasia).
  • Iron chelates with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired.
  • Present in breast milk, use caution during lactation.
Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
Drug interactions

Iron: Absorption decreased with antacids. May reduce effects of penicillamine. Concurrent use with psychotropic drugs may worsen constipation. Increased systemic side effects with ACE inhibitors and parenteral iron.

Folic acid: Antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, aminopterin, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim and sulphonamides may decrease serum folate concentrations. Decreases serum phenytoin concentrations.
