Description
Ferrous Ascorbate is an iron replacement product. It is used to treat a type of anemia where you have too few red blood cells because you have too little iron in your body (iron-deficiency anaemia). Iron is needed to produce the red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body. Ferrous Ascorbate is given as injection by your doctor or nurse. You will be watched carefully to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction. Your doctor will decide how much dose you need and how many injections you should have to improve your anaemia. Depending on the cause of your anaemia, it may help to eat a well-balanced diet that has enough iron, vitamins and minerals. Good sources of iron include meat, eggs, raisins, broccoli and lentils. The most common side effects include vomiting, nausea, constipation, and dark colored stools. Most of these usually go away within a short time. If you are bothered by them or they go on for longer, talk to your doctor or nurse. Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have rheumatoid arthritis, asthma or other allergies, high blood pressure or liver problems. This may affect your treatment. It is not known whether this medicine is safe for use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so please take advice from your doctor. You will have tests to check your blood cells and iron levels, monitor your progress and check for side effects. It may be advisable to limit alcohol during treatment. Ferrous Ascorbate is a combination of of iron and vitamin C. Iron works by replenishing the iron stores in your body and corrects iron deficiency anemia. Vitamin C (ascorbate) is added to enhance the absorption of iron in the body.
Indications
• Iron deficiency anemia • Anemia due to chronic kidney disease
Mechanism of action
Ferrous ascorbate is a synthetic molecule of ascorbic acid and iron. Ferrous ascorbate is a stable complex of iron and ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid plays an important role in movement of plasma iron to storage depots in tissues. There is also evidence that ascorbic acid improves iron utilization, by its reducing action and it may have direct effect on erythropoiesis. This molecule doesn’t dissociate on entering GI Tract due to the stable chelate of iron with ascorbate. There is no action of food inhibitors on it as the complex does not dissociate. Ascorbate is a reducing agent and prevents oxidation. Thus maintains iron in highly soluble ferrous form.
