Fluormetholone + Neomycin Sulphate

Fluormetholone + Neomycin Sulphate is a prescription medicine having a combination of medicines that is used to treat bacterial infections. It stops the growth of bacteria and helps in relieving redness, itching and swelling.

This combination contains two medicines: Neomycin and Fluorometholone. Neomycin is an antibiotic that stops bacterial growth in the eye by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins. Fluorometholone is a steroid which blocks the production of chemical messengers that make the eye red, swollen and itchy.

• Allergic and Inflammatory Eye Conditions: Used for treatment of conjunctivitis (sticky eyes) due to organisms sensitive to neomycin.
• Post-operative Infection Prevention: Used before and after surgery where there is a possibility of infection.

Corticosteroid + Aminoglycoside Antibiotic

Fluorometholone suppresses the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability thus decreasing inflammation. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It binds to 30S ribosomal subunits of bacterial ribosome thus inhibiting protein synthesis and generating errors in genetic code transcription causing cell death.

Fluorometholone reduces inflammation and allergy; Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis to stop bacterial growth.

Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):

• Instill 1-2 drops 2-4 times/day in the affected eye.
• May increase dose to 4 hrly in severe cases during the initial 24-48 hr.

For external use only. Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

If you miss a dose of Fluormetholone + Neomycin Sulphate, apply it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side Effects:

• Elevated intraocular pressure
• Optic nerve damage
• Postsubcapsular cataract formation
• Delayed wound healing
• Uveitis
• Corneal ulcers
• Secondary ocular infections
• Rarely systemic hypercorticoidism

Precautions:

• Glaucoma (check intraocular pressure periodically)
• History of herpes simplex, fungal or bacterial infections
• Not to be used in mustard gas keratitis and Sjogren's keratoconjunctivitis
• May cause corneal and scleral thinning which may lead to perforation
• Use of steroids after cataract surgery may prolong healing time
• Safety not established in children under 2 years

Contraindications:

• Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, Vaccinia, Varicella)
• Mycobacterial eye infection
• Ocular fungal infections
• Untreated eye infections
• Hypersensitivity
• Pregnancy and lactation (as per some guidelines)

Drug Interactions:

• When using with other topical eye medications, leave several minutes between applications.

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe; animal studies have shown harmful effects; consult your doctor before use.

Use in Lactation: Probably safe; to reduce amount reaching breastmilk, place pressure over corner of eye for 1 minute or more, then remove excess solution with tissue.

Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy not established in children under 2 years; use in children over 2 years under medical advice.

Geriatric Use: No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

Renal Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Hepatic Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Overdose: Limited information on topical overdose; excessive use may cause eye irritation.

Storage: Store at or below 25 degree C. Do not freeze. Do not use 30 days after first opening.
