Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep

Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. It is used to treat redness and swelling in the eyes that may be due to infection or allergy. It reduces swelling, itching, and soreness after any eye injuries or eye surgery.

Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep is a steroid. It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause redness and swelling in the eye.

• Redness and swelling in the eye: Used for acute and chronic allergic non-infectious conjunctivitis and keratitis with severe swelling and intravascular injection.
• Non-infectious inflammation of anterior segment: Used for anterior uveitis, episcleritis and scleritis.
• Post-operative conditions: Used for irritative conditions after strabotomy, cataract and glaucoma surgery.

Fluorometholone is thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid. It suppresses the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability thus decreasing inflammation.

Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):

• Instill 1-2 drops into conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily.
• Dose may be increased to 1 drop hourly during first 24-48 hours in severe cases.

Child Dose (above 2 years):

• Instill 1-2 drops into conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily.
• Dose may be increased to 1 drop hourly during first 24-48 hours in severe cases.

For external use only. Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

If you miss a dose of Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep, apply it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Eye irritation
• Burning sensation
• Watery eyes
• Mild burning sensation
• Reversible increase in intraocular pressure

With prolonged use: Delayed wound healing, increased IOP, cataract formation, thinning of cornea and sclera.

Precautions:

• Fluorometholone 0.1% Eye prep may cause blurring of vision for a short time after use; do not drive until vision is clear.
• Do not use for more than the prescribed duration (may cause glaucoma or secondary infection).
• Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface or to your eye.
• Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute after instilling the drop.
• Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye.
• If wearing soft contact lenses, remove before putting in drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting lenses back in.
• Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Contraindications:

• Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, Vaccinia, Varicella)
• Mycobacterial eye infection
• Ocular fungal infections
• Untreated eye infections
• Hypersensitivity
• Glaucoma

Drug Interactions: When using with other topical eye medications, leave several minutes between applications.

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe; animal studies have shown harmful effects; doctor will weigh benefits and potential risks.

Use in Lactation: Probably safe; limited data suggests no significant risk to baby; to reduce amount reaching breastmilk, place pressure over corner of eye for 1 minute and remove excess solution.

Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy not established in children under 2 years; over 2 years same as adult dose.

Geriatric Use: No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

Renal Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Hepatic Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Overdose: Overdose is unlikely when used as directed; excessive use may cause eye irritation.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use more than 4 weeks after opening.
