How it works: Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and maintenance of normal erythropoiesis. Vitamin B6 plays a role in lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and tissue respiration. Vitamin B12 is required for maintenance of normal erythropoiesis, nucleoprotein and myelin synthesis.

Pharmacology

Folic acid: Required for nucleoprotein synthesis and the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis; converted to tetrahydrofolic acid by dihydrofolate reductase; prevents neural tube defects. Vitamin B6: Plays a role in the synthesis and maintenance of coenzyme A. Necessary for lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, tissue respiration, glycogenolysis. Vitamin B12: Required for the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis, nucleoprotein and myelin synthesis, cell reproduction and normal growth.

Mechanism of action

Folic acid aids in DNA synthesis. Vitamin B6 plays a role in amino acid metabolism. Vitamin B12 aids in myelin formation and red blood cell production.

Dosage

Adult Dose:

  • Daily Dietary Supplement: 1-2 tablets daily.

Administration

Oral tablet. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole.

Missed dose

  • Folic acid: Allergic sensitization (rare).
  • Vitamin B6: Paresthesia, somnolence, nausea and headache.
  • Vitamin B12: Mild transient diarrhea, polycythemia vera, itching, rash.
Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Folic acid when administered as a single agent in doses above 0.1 mg daily may obscure pernicious anemia.
  • Unmetabolized Folic Acid has the potential to reduce natural killer cells' cytotoxicity, which may result in an impaired immune response.

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the components in the product.
Drug interactions

Drug Interactions:

  • Folic acid: Antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, methotrexate may decrease serum folate concentrations. Decreases serum phenytoin concentrations.
  • Vitamin B12: Absorption reduced by antibiotics, aminosalicylic acid, anticonvulsants, biguanides, cholestyramine.
