Kanamycin

Kanamycin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This may include infections of the urinary tract, bones and joints, lungs (eg. pneumonia), blood, and some others. It is also used in the treatment of resistant tuberculosis. Kanamycin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or a muscle under the supervision of a healthcare professional. It should be used regularly at evenly spaced time intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medicine too early may lead to the infection returning or worsening. This medicine may lead to hearing loss, balance disorder (loss of balance), injection site pain and kidney damage as side effects in some patients. Therefore, please follow all the instructions given by your doctor while using this medicine. If these side effects do not resolve or worsen, please consult your doctor. Your doctor may monitor you with regular kidney function tests, hearing tests and urine tests during treatment. Some patients may also be advised to get blood levels of this medicine measured. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding. Kanamycin is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Bactericidal Aminoglycoside contain 1 or 2 amino sugars linked to an aminocyclitol nucleus. Nucleus is 2-deoxystreptamine. Bactericidal and believed to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to 30 S ribosomal subunit.

Adult Dose: Susceptible Infections IV Administration: 5-7.5 mg/kg/dose divided q8-12hr; not to exceed 15 mg/kg/day divided q6-12hr; administer slowly IM Administration: 5-7.5 mg/kg/dose divided q8-12hr; not to exceed 15 mg/kg/day IM divided q12hr at equally divided intervals; continuously high blood levels are desired; daily dose of 15 mg/kg may be given divided q6-8hr Aerosol: 250 mg q6-12hr by nebulization Renal Dose: Renal Impairment CrCl 50-80 mL/min: give 60-90% of usual dose or give q8-12hr CrCl 10-50 mL/min: give 30-70% of usual dose or give q12hr CrCl <10 mL/min: give 20-30% of usual dose or give q24-48hr

[SAFE] Consuming alcohol with Kanamycin does not cause any harmful side effects.

[CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR] Kanamycin is unsafe to use during pregnancy as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby. However, the doctor may rarely prescribe it in some life-threatening situations if the benefits are more than the potential risks. Please consult your doctor.

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Kanamycin is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.
